What I Did On My Weekend

Friday - I had a bout of gastronomic distress and insomnia the night before, so I called out of work. Friday morning, I played Borderlands. Around 2 o'clock, I thought it would be a good idea to seek lunch. I did not get home until 10pm. I wasted a lot of time talking to the regulars at the Shanty, making fun of GameShow Network shows, and listening to how local business fared in October (most good, some shops are closing, though). I then came home and drank too much wine.

Saturday - Recovered from wine. Beat Borderlands playthrough 1. (The Destructor can go fuck itself). Used Foursquare to track down folks who were in town drinking. Drank a little. Went to a birthday party.

Fell 15 feet off a deck.

I'm okay except for some bruises and scrapes, but it could have been a lot worse. Luckily I bounced off a metal carport on my way down and did not land on any rusted nails or shattered guardrails from the part of the deck that broke.

Sunday - Started Dragon Age. Decided it was too nice to play videogames all day, so walked to Marblehead for nachos. Came home.

Serious Heraldry Question Is Serious.

So my name passed, which is yay, but my device did not, which is boo.

Here is the breakdown:
Irayari Vairavi. Badge. (Fieldless) On a lotus blossom affronty argent, a trident's head sable.

This badge is returned for conflict with Drachenwald's badge (Fieldless) An edelweiss argent charged with a dragon's head couped sable. There is a CD for fieldlessness, but no difference is granted between an edelweiss and a lotus blossom affronty, nor is there difference for changing only the type of the tertiary charge, since flowers are not suitable charges for purposes of section X.4.j.ii of the Rules for Submission.
Now I know that in some situations it is possible to get a "Permission to Conflict" letter from the holder of the conflicting device. Does this a) hold true for badges and b) have any relevance if the conflict is with something held by a Kingdom?

(For reference sake, the badge in question is the Drachenwald equivalent of a Cypher)

Oh Great Heraldic Hive Mind, what say you?

Recap!

Friday night the stars finally aligned and I got to play with my small Mage group. I integrated fairly seamlessly with the new group, and got a fairly good grip on my former biker now Akashic Brother.

Saturday started off with a Warhammer game in preparation for an upcoming tournament, then cozy time relaxing with Tegin and Johanna as we got back into our Angel habit. Our next viewing shouldn't take two years, and we cemented our starting point for the second half of Season Five. Sara's had friends over and roped me into a game of Mah Jong, and before I knew it it was 10:30. I drove out to Underworld, but came home early. It was a slower than usual night, and I didn't have the energy or drive to dance.

Sunday I did the Terrible Thirty Five for CrossFit, and damn near killed myself. I didn't think I'd have enough energy to lift my dice for our game later that day, but luckily I rallied and even made it to game on time. Miracles do happen! The game was a good time, and we are closing in on the end of this chapter. I'll have to make a CD of suitably epic movie music for the big fight next session. I ended up staying up way too late on the computer last night, but made it to work on time.

I won't say I made the best choices this weekend, but overall I made more good ones than bad. There's always more choices to be made.

Ask not for whom my eyes roll.

The headline from today's Metro:

Commies not over the Berlin Wall's fall

...along with a overly-biased editorial that implies that the violence at Fort Hood was a terrorist attack had me thinking that I'd write about labels and dehumanization as tools of social control, but I really don't have it in me today. Besides, there's altogether too much shouting as it is.

I will say this: "Commie" is SOOO 19551985.

Oh look, ROCK!

There are a couple clips from Friday's show up on Facebook - they're not YouTube so I don't know how to get them over here. They rock.

Also, I just got a review and single up on The AmpEater Review: http://ampeatermusic.com. (I was kinda hoping to get the final of the one song up there, but we'll do that on Amie Street, and maybe The James Rocket Club)

I think it's a pretty good review. Dude gets a few facts wrong here and there but no sweat. Makes me sound like some kind of elder statesman!

"James William Roy has been making music since before I was born. He picked up the bass in 1982 and the guitar shortly afterward. He began recording his own music at home on an 8-track long before it was considered ‘retro’ to do so. Over the years he’s been more bands than one could comfortably keep track of; Tin Honey Gold, Idiot Purge, and St. Bastard, to name a few. If you’re looking for a few hours of entertainment, a full listing is available at thejamesrocket.com. Currently Roy plays bass in A Bunch of Girls, which he describes lovingly as “the last rock band in NYC.” And in between gigs, he somehow finds the time to hold down a full time job, maintain a healthy marriage, and to write and produce some pretty fresh music. "

Royal Whims

I think if I am ever Queen, my first whim will be to declare that Bollywood is period for the duration of my reign.

I expect Court will be full of many spontaneous dance numbers. Also that it will be so long as to require intermissions. And samosas will be served.

(Hey, at least samosas really ARE period.)

NaNuDriNi followup

I think the problem was drinking the two cocktails in rapid succession. I've had two drinks today, but one at around 6pm or so and one at 10pm to help with the NaNoing and I'm fine now. As I told [info]cris after I collapsed in giggles, when I ask him if I should have a second drink, the answer should be "no". :) I stayed tipsy all through the party that I attended last night, sticking with ice water while I was there and having many babbly conversations. :)

I did manage to take some pictures of our costumes before we headed out, using the auto timer. I didn't try to do the neck scars after the utter failure last weekend.

Skirt made from this pattern (walking length), jacket drafted from instructions in this book (with lots of cursing, you'd think an updated edition would fix the mistakes in the original), scarf made by making a rolled hem around two sewn together pieces of red silk. If you click through to the three picture gallery, I left the blurry first one in because it pretty much captured how I felt after two cocktails last night. :)

My auction is up!

So if you were in the market for a giant hank of crazy art yarn, now is the time to go bid. Not that anyone I know would really be that into this, but I'm excited about it. :) I actually completely love this yarn, and can't wait to see who gets it and what they do with it.

Sweeney Todd!

If there's any other fans of the George Hearn/Angela Lansbury Sweeney Todd, [info]fishheadned has been so good as to pull the entire soundtrack from the 1982 performance DVD in to mp3s.

So happymaking.

Whip It

[info]emilytheslayer and I went to see Whip It yesterday and it was a great movie. Both of us were thinking about wanting it on DVD before the movie was even half over. I'd go see it again in the theater. And it wasn't even just for all the Drew-Barrymore-aliciousness in the movie! It was an excellent movie in all aspects from what it chose to focus on to the acting to the soundtrack. I'll certainly be getting the soundtrack.

In addition, it isn't playing on many screens around here right now and we had a choice between Harvard Sq. and Danvers. We went to Danvers in hopes of getting a bigger screen and we did! Statium seating, 23 screen theater. I'll be going to more movies there, it is only around 1/2 an hour away.
